I often have new clients come to me and they are perplexed as to why the weight is not coming off. They feel they are doing the hard work with their workouts and feel they are making the right dietary choices. But what may appear to be the ‘right’ food choices may not always be the case!
Foods That Hinder Weight Loss –
1. Reduced Fat foods- In many cases when food manufacturers cut the fat it is replaced with added sugar or sodium. You are better off having a small portion of the real food than the alternate substitutes.
2. Gluten-free foods- Gluten free does not necessarily mean healthier. Many of the wheat, barley and rye substitutes can have a high glycemic index and are of no benefit when trying to lose weight. However, some substitutes like brown rice flour, quinoa flour, buckwheat flour and almond meal to name a few are healthy and beneficial compared to conventional, processed flour.
3. Turkey bacon and sausage- Turkey may be the healthier meat but in bacon and sausage it is of the processed variety which is loaded with sodium. Excessive sodium leads to bloating and the scales tipping in the wrong direction.
4. 100-calorie snacks- The mini, 100 calorie snacks are usually just empty calories that do not satisfy hunger nor provide any nutritional value. You are much better off having double the calories of food that satisfies and provides nutritional substance such as fiber, healthy fat and protein.
Drinks That Hinder Weight Loss –
1. Sports Drinks- They provide beneficial electrolytes but also added sugar that most people do not require. Unless you are exercising for over an hour and in the heat, only then is it necessary to replace lost electrolytes.
2. Smoothies- They are not all created equally. Be aware of added sugars and make sure the carbohydrates from the fruit are balanced with a healthy protein such as whey or pea protein.
3. Coffee drinks- Coffee alone is not bad but be aware of all the milk and sugar that is added to the different coffee concoctions.
4. Juices- Most juices have added sugar and simply have too many calories that do not help satiate you. As for the 100% juices, they are better but still do not provide the added fiber that helps fill you up.
In short, you are in good shape if you are choosing all natural, unprocessed foods and drinking plenty of water! All the best on your weight loss journey!
